New format Familiarization Program

The Virtual Campus of Public Health of PAHO in its efforts to provide improvements in the development of courses for this year has developed a new format for the Program Familiarization with the various tools that the classroom gives both pupils and tutors .

It began during the month of February the familiarization phase of the course "Management of Health Programs and Services for the Elderly". This is the second version of this specialization that has had excellent results in its first version made in 2009.

This course had its first Elluminate session on 4 February addressed to the familiarization of students and tutors with the tools available in the classroom and especially in using Elluminate.

(Enlarge Image) With very satisfactory results developed between 7 and 9 December at the site of BIREME, Sao Paulo, the Workshop for Open Educational Resource Network (Red REA / ERO) by its initials in Spanish and English respectively.

The workshop was attended by representatives of countries Nodes of the Network of Campus Virtual Public Health (VCPH), Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, the team of Regional and VCPH BIREME. Also attended by a representative of Paraguay prepares to have its Node Campus in 2010.

Farewell Dr. Pedro Brito, HSS Area Manager, PAHO

(Enlarge Image) Last Friday, 11 December at PAHO headquarters in Washington DC. activity was performed by Dr. Pedro Brito farewell after 21 years who retires from the organization. It was present Director Dr. Mirta Roses, the Assistant Director Dr. Socorro Gross, and Dr. Jose Luis Di Fabio, new director of HSS (acting).

During the meeting with all workers of HSS was recognized the valuable contribution of Pedro during these years of work at PAHO, particularly in the areas of Human Resources and Health Systems and Services. The Virtual Campus of Public Health is home at times that Dr. Brito was head of the HR unit and after his appointment as Area Manager of HSS, in 2003, has maintained its sustained support for the initiative and its process decentralization.

This course until the time has benefited 474 students of which 156 have completed the certificate and will receive their final evaluation.

(Enlarge Image) Rethinking health from the perspective of international health, the challenge was over thirty Latin American experts and officials from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), took in the city of Lima for the past 8, 9 and 10 October 2009.

Participants in the meeting, convened by the Program on International Health Leaders "Edmundo Granda Ugalde (PLSI) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), theorized about what might become a new conceptual approach to the international health, now conceived as a required field of study and practice, and shared the progress that today presents the PLSI with about ten programs produced by public health schools in Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Chile and the U.S..

Workshop on the Development of an Online Module for the Leaders in International Health Program Edmundo Granda Ugalde

(Enlarge Image)On 8-9 October, 2009 a workshop was held in Kingston, Jamaica to commence the development of an online module on Chronic Diseases and Trade, which will be used for the Leaders in International Health Program Edmundo Granda Ugalde (LIHP) 2010.

The objective of the LIHP is to strengthen the capacity of countries in the region to understand, act upon and positively influence the international determinants of health, to promote their national interests, and to achieve intersectoral health agreements in international environments, at all times guided by the principle of greater global equity in health.

Meeting on the Adaptation of the Skills Enhancement for Public Health Program to the English-speaking Caribbean

(Enlarge image)On 9-10 September, 2009 a workshop was held in Kingston, Jamaica to commence the adaptation process of the Skills Enhancement for Public Health Program to a Caribbean context.The Skills Enhancement for Public Health Program is a highly regarded, interactive, online course that was originally developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to increase the skills of health professionals across Canada.

Beginning in 2007 and through a special collaboration with PAHO’s Virtual Campus for Public Health, over 78 front line health workers from 12 countries in the Caribbean have been trained through the Program in various aspects of epidemiology. Evaluations of this pilot have been extremely positive and the present workshop was arranged to begin a process of adaptation and decentralization of the modules to the English-speaking Caribbean context.

La Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) realizará el II Taller “Hacia una nueva construcción del modelo conceptual de salud internacional”. Este taller se desarrollará en Lima, Perú, del 28 al 30 de octubre del 2009.

El taller tiene como objetivo principal contribuir a la construcción del modelo conceptual de salud internacional con una mayor capacidad explicativa de la complejidad creciente de los procesos de salud-enfermedad en un momento de transformación de la geopolítica regional y en un contexto de globalización que afecta a todos los países, y explorar el establecimiento de una red académica de salud internacional / salud global en la región.
