On 4 and 5 March the annual meeting of the decentralized nodes of the Virtual Campus for Public Health was held in Bogota, Colombia.

Launch of the Virtual Course on Properly Completing Death Certificates for medical doctors

We are pleased to launch of the Virtual Course on Properly Completing Death Certificates for medical doctors on the PAHO Virtual Campus (March 20th, 2015), developed by experts in the Family of International Classifications (FIC-WHO). This course aims to contribute to the improvement of the quality of the mortality data. It is a self-learning virtual course that can be accessed from any computer or mobile device connected to the Internet. The target audience is medical doctors responsible for filling out death certificates in hospitals or any other health facility. In addition, final year medical students are also encouraged to participate.

Deadline to submit applications for "How to effectively address NCDs in 21st Century" course extended to March 2nd

We announce that the deadline to submit application forms to participate in the Virtual Course "How to effectively address Non Communicable Diseases in 21st Century (2015 version)" has been extended to March 2, 2015 (previously the deadline was February 26).

The course will run from 9 March to 7 June, 2015, and is targeted to Caribbean NCD country managers and managers in related areas: Health promotion, NCD Epidemiology, diabetes, CVD or cancer program managers. Selected participants will be notified by March 5.

Third meeting for the constitution of VCPH Panama Node

On Wednesday 28 February the 3rd meeting in the creation of Panama Node Virtual Campus of Public Health, PAHO was held at the offices of PAHO in Panama.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Gaspar Da Costa, assigned by the Ministry of Health to coordinate the node, Dr. Federico Hernandez Pimentel - PAHO Representative in Panama and Dr. Rosa María Borrell -. Head Unit Resources human Health (ai). PAHO-WDC.

Dr. Federico Hernandez welcomed, appreciated the presence of Dr. Rosa María Borrell and acknowledged the efforts of the various institutions that are participating in the development of the node.

The VCPH regional team visit Nicaragua

The past November 16 the regional team of Virtual Campus of Public Health, participated in a workshop in Managua for the consolidation of Nicaragua node where the Virtual Campus of Public Health presented with the country's institutions (MINSA and their diverse areas, universities, institutes of technical education and military hospitals).

Workshop on the Analysis of the situation of human resources for health at the national level and its harmonization with health policies in Panama

Under the "Workshop on the Analysis of the situation of human resources for health at the national level and its harmonization with health policy" on Wednesday October 29 was presented at the PAHO Headquarters Panama Virtual Campus for Public Health as a tool for development and technical cooperation.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health, the Social Security Fund, Universities and Professional Associations.

On Thursday October 30th a day of work centered on present experience in the development of the country and nodes accompany Panamanian institutions in developing Panama VCPH node was performed.

Meeting of Ministers of Health in Veracruz, Mexico, on October 28, 2014 at the XIV Iberoamerican Conference of Health Ministers

On 27 and 28 October was held in Veracruz, Mexico, the XIV Iberoamerican Meeting of Ministers of Health.

The meeting discussed how technological innovations help to strengthen public health policy, especially aimed at the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases. In the statement there are several specific issues related to human resources for health, training and promoting the use of ICT.

These include:

  • The use of tele-education for the training of health professionals.
  • Promoting the use of ICTs to strengthen the skills and work in interdisciplinary teams.

The call for applications to the first version of the self-learning virtual course NURSING LEADERSHIP: EMPOWERING NURSE LEADERS IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN will be open soon. The course will take place from March 2 to May 22, 2015

The course aims to empower nurses in Latin America and the Caribbean by enhancing participants’  understanding and application of nursing leadership and management principles.

The course is free of charge and open to nursing professionals with a minimum of an undergraduate-level nursing education and currently practicing in the nursing field, either as a nurse clinician, educator or administrator.

Recent Completion of courses in the area of Pesticides, GRADE Methodology and English version of Virtual Course for Tutors

Recently, three courses offered through the Regional Virtual Classroom of the Virtual Campus for Public Health concluded successfully.

Nineteen (19) health professionals distributed throughout the region of the Americas (specifically in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela) participated and successfully completed the first version of the "Virtual Course with regional experts in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute pesticide poisoning (in Spanish)".

The VCPH collaborated on reviewing of the first prototype of the PMIS

Over three weeks, the PMIS central team in collaboration with the VCPH, together with colleagues from various departments and country offices, participated in the process of "Review of Solutions". During the working sessions of the first prototype of PMIS, which has the initial configuration of modules HR Payroll evaluated.

The Review Solutions was a very interactive exercise in which Collaborative Solutions, responsible for integrating all systems PMIS, presented his interpretation of the administrative processes of the PAHO and how these fit into Workday (central system PMIS) "said Gonzalo Contreras, Manager PAHO Argentina.

Core Competencies for Public Health: A Regional Framework for the Americas

The Regional Core Competency Framework for Public Health (RCCFPH) is the result of a collective effort, led by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and deriving from a process that involved over 240 collaborators from 28 countries in the Americas Region. The Framework hopes to strategically support the countries of the Americas in strengthening the capacity of their health systems in the area of public health. The purpose of the Framework is to promote the development of master training plans for health human resources, as a strategy for the optimal performance of the Essential Public Health Functions. 

Workshop to update "New tools of the Virtual Campus of Public Health" is realized

On 25 and 26 June 2014 was held at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Washington, DC workshop update "New tools of the Virtual Campus of Public Health", involving general coordinators and academics various regional courses. The workshop as educational aspects VCPH pattern, environment and toolchain VCPH Virtual Classroom in Moodle 2.5 platform were reviewed. Various practical activities in which each participant created a single project and browsing, editing, resources and learning activities, assessment and monitoring through the Virtual Classroom explored were also developed. Self-Learning Spanish course "Prevention Measures and Cholera Treatment"

The Virtual Campus for Public Health of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) releases the Spanish Virtual Course "Prevention Measures and Cholera Treatment" (Curso Virtual “Medidas de Contención y Manejo Correcto del Cólera”).  This course has been prepared by the Secretariat of Health of Mexico and kindly shared for publication through the Virtual Classroom.

It is important to note that "in the world today 3 to 5 million cases of cholera occur annually and is responsible for 100,000 to 120,000 deaths. Overall, diarrheal diseases remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially among populations with the lowest human development ... "

Farewell of "Hubert Humphrey Fellows" in the office of PAHO in Washington

On 10 June, the Director met with Hubert Humphrey Fellows to bid them farewell at the conclusion of their two-month ‘professional affiliation’ experience at PAHO, a key component of their 10-month leadership training in the United States.

This year’s group came from nine countries in the five WHO regions: Albania, Egypt, Haiti, India, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, the Philippines and Thailand.

They worked in several technical areas on projects related to HIV/AIDS, health communications, health systems financing, medical education, substance abuse, nutrition and non-communicable diseases.

Extended meeting with Bolivian authorities and technical institutions on the Virtual Campus for Public Health and Educational Virtual Clinic

On May 7, 2014, in La Paz, Bolivia, with the presence of Dr. Michel Thieren, Representative of PAHO / WHO and the organizers Bolivia Hannover and Dr. Susana Escalante Giovanni, a meeting with officials and technicians was conducted 10 Bolivian educational institutions and health, where node creation of the Virtual Campus for Public Health of Bolivia was analyzed. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Jose Jardines and Mr. Edgardo De Gracia VCPH, who presented the project of the Virtual Campus for Public Health and Educational Virtual Clinic.

Evaluation of the Pilot Project Educational Virtual Clinic in Panama

The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Panama, supporting the initiative of the Educational Virtual Clinic of Virtual Campus for Public Health, called the specialist and health professionals who participated in the pilot project . The event was chaired by Dr. Zelibeth Valverde, Director of Planning, Ministry of Health and Dr. Gaspar Da Costa, an expert in psychiatry and project manager in the Educational Virtual Clinic.

This activity held last April 30, 2014, aimed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Virtual Clinic, and formulate a strategy for the implementation of the second phase of the project.
