The President of Chile will chair PAHO commission tasked with advancing universal health in the Americas 
President Michelle Bachelet of Chile will chair a high-level commission that was convened by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to propose solutions for expanding health coverage and access in the Americas, with the goal of leaving no one behind by 2030. Read more

 

More than 390,000 users enrolled in the Virtual Campus
In December 2017, the Virtual Campus reached 394,000 users to the online courses offered in its educational platform. More than 100,000 users completed self-learning courses, and 27,000 completed courses organized by the Virtual Campus nodes in the countries. During 2017, more than 500 health professionals and students finished the new courses with tutoring offered in the regional platform. Read more

 

New regional system to report medicines related adverse events and substandard/falsified products 
The Caribbean Public Health Agency/Caribbean Regulatory System, with the support of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization, launched a program to identify dangerous substandard medicines throughout the region. Read more

 

PAHO launches new study on migration of health workers in the Caribbean
PAHO/WHO has launched a new study that will survey current migration trends of health care workers in the Caribbean Region. The results of the survey will be used to develop recommendations and address the challenges that migration poses for the health sector of countries involved. Read more

 

Management information system strengthening in six hospitals in Panama
PAHO, together with the Ministry of Health of Panama, advanced in the development of actions to strengthen health services networks in different regions of the country. Over the past year, more than 200 managers of the hospitals were trained in topics related to productive management of health services, cost management, and beds management. Read more

New guidelines on ethical treatment of humans in health-related research
Fifty years ago, a diagnosis of childhood leukemia was virtually a death sentence, and thousands of children lost their lives in the absence of a treatment or a cure for the disease. But after years of scientific research--involving many of those same patients—treatments are now available and the vast majority of children with childhood leukemia today survive. Read more

Launch of global campaign on #NursingNow
On February 27, 2018, the Pan American Health Organization will join the launching of the global campaign, Nursing Now, to raise the status and profile of nursing in the region of the Americas and worldwide. Read more

Más de 390.000 matriculados en el Campus Virtual
En diciembre de 2017, el Campus Virtual de la OPS/OMS, , alcanzó los 394.000 matriculados a los cursos online ofrecidos en su plataforma educacional. Durante el 2017, más de 100.000 usuarios finalizaron cursos de autoaprendizaje, y 27.000 personas finalizaron cursos organizados por los nodos del campus virtual en los países.  En este mismo período, más de 500 profesionales y estudiantes del área de la salud finalizaron los nuevos cursos con tutoría ofrecidos en la plataforma regional. Leer más

Nuevo sistema regional para reportar eventos adversos relacionados con medicamentos y productos substándar/falsificados
La Agencia de Salud Pública del Caribe/Sistema Regulador del Caribe, con el apoyo de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud, lanzó un programa para identificar medicamentos peligrosos y de calidad substándar en toda la región. Leer más.

La OPS lanza un nuevo estudio sobre la migración de trabajadores de la salud en el Caribe
La OPS/OMS ha lanzado un nuevo estudio que analizará las tendencias actuales de migración de los trabajadores de la salud en la Región del Caribe. Los resultados de la encuesta se utilizarán para desarrollar recomendaciones sobre la migración dentro del sector de la salud de los países involucrados. Leer más

 

Fortalecimiento del sistema de información gerencial en seis hospitales en Panamá
La OPS, junto al  Ministerio de Salud de Panamá, avanzaron en el desarrollo de acciones para el fortalecimiento de las redes de servicio de salud en diferentes regiones de Panamá. En el último año, se capacitaron más de 200 gestores de los hospitales en temas de gestión productiva de servicios de salud, gestión de costos y gestión de camas. Leer más

New online curse on Nursing Leadership
This self-learning online course, offered through the Virtual Campus of Public Health platform, aims to empower nurses in Latin America and the Caribbean by enhancing their understanding of nursing leadership and management principles that can be utilized in the practice of nursing. Upon completion of all course modules, participants receive a certificate of course completion. Read more

Call for Application Deadline: Leaders in International Health Program  

The Human Resources for Health Unit (HSS/HR) is pleased to announce the call for applications for the Edmundo Granda Ugalde Leaders in International Health Program 2018. It is a training program designed to contribute to strengthening country capacity in international health. February 15 is the deadline for submitting applications. Read more
 

Health Financing and Financial Protection in the Americas
This working paper shows an overview of the health system financing situation in the Region and the advances and challenges they still face under the lens of Universal Health objectives. The first section examines health financing in the Region, with special attention to financial protection. The third and final sections discuss the immediate challenges facing the countries in terms of the need to equitably and efficiently increase financing with financial protection. Read more
