The Course Intensified national SARI surveillance training has started

On october beginning the Course Intensified national SARI surveillance training with the objetive To train national professionals involved in the process of integrated SARI surveillance, particularly influenza , according to WHO/PAHO updated guidelines.

Among the lessons learned from the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 pandemic were the lack of systems for monitoring the evolution of influenza and clinical–epidemiological characteristics, especially among severe cases, and the lack of standardized systems for comparing data between countries. Thus, systems to monitor SARI have been prioritized, and should also seek to integrate clinical-epidemiological and laboratory surveillance of influenza and other respiratory viruses.

PAHO launches first edition of Virtual Course on Gender and Health for the English-speaking Caribbean

On September 20, 2013 the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) launches the first edition of its Virtual Course on Gender and Health for the English-speaking Caribbean. The purpose of the course, which was developed in response to PAHO/WHO’s Gender and Health Policy, is to strengthen participants’ abilities to integrate the gender perspective within a diversity and Human Rights framework in their daily tasks.

“With this course, we hope to improve our partners´ access to information, tools, and evidence,” said Dr. Carissa Etienne, director of PAHO/WHO. “We also want to help users share experiences and build networks to continue the dialogue on how to include gender in health.”

About thirty professionals from universities and institutes of higher education in health sciences Buenos Aires Argentina participated in a training workshop on virtual education, through the use of tools and labor potential of the Virtual Campus of Public Health (VCPH) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which serves as the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Implementation of Educational Virtual Clinic in Jujuy, Argentina

Jujuy launched the pilot phase of the Educational Virtual Clinic, a platform that will enable health professionals to consult, ask experts and discussions of diagnosed cases.

This tool, developed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), will be useful for doctors and nurses who are in remote areas or far from the provincial capital.

The platform also has an area of ​​eLearning (learning) and a gallery that will interest clinical image sharing teaching. Thus, the initiative seeks to develop skills in family health teams and community, some of them located in areas of native peoples.

"Capacity Development for the Renewal of Primary Health Care" Virtual Course begins

The 6th edition (in spanish) of the virtual course "Capacity Development for the Renewal of Primary Health Care" began this past July 26. The purpose of this course is to aid managers, leaders and health professionals in decision-making for the process of renewal of primary health care systems. 

Eighty eight (88) students from 11 countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Paraguay) are participating. Dr. Carlos Rosales has been designated General Coordinator for the course, and Dr. Irene Melamed is the Academic Coordinator. The course also has a team of tutors with great experience in this topic, and is expected to end in December 2013.

Dr. Carlos Bloch passed away at 81

The June 11, 2013, at 81, passed away Dr. Carlos Bloch, Rosario unionist prominent physician and sanitarian recognized internationally. He studied medicine at Rosario, was a student activist and became a doctor in 1957. He joined the Board of the School of Medicine until 1966 coup. In parallel also involved in union medical organizations as the Medical Federation of the province of Santa Fe and Rosario Medical Association. Since this space is among the organizers in 1965 Argentinean Social Seventh Medical Conference held in Rosario.

The 2013 Opening Ceremony for the Edmundo Granda Ugalde Leaders in international Health Program (LIHP) took place virtually on 3 June 2013, with approximately 100 people participating from over 20 different countries. The bilingual event included a keynote presentation by Dr. José Romero Teruel, Assistant Director a.i. of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau, who highlighted the contributions of the Program in the development of professionals who are able to confront health and development challenges in an increasingly globalized world.
