Description:

PAHO caried out this first in a series of webinars on the SDGs and youth focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3: Ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages on Wednesday, October 25 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, Washington DC time.

The SDG 3 targets include reduction of maternal, neonatal, and child mortality, ending the epidemics of communicable diseases, reduction of the burden of non-communicable diseases and promotion of mental health and wellbeing, reduction of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents, ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, and universal health coverage.

At the launch of the SDGs in 2015, the UN Secretary General emphasized the importance of young people in the SDG process. Currently, the population of young people (10-24 years) in the Americas is the largest in the history of the Region, at an estimated 237 million, and is projected to decrease to 230 million by 2030. Indications are that young people are not fully benefiting from SDG investments and progress globally and in the Americas.

Objective(s) of the meeting:

This first webinar promoted reflection on the current status of SDG targets for young people and on what can be done to accelerate SDG progress for this population group, in particular for those living in conditions of vulnerability, ensuring that young people are not left behind.
